How Long Is a First Aid Responder Certificate Valid?
In Ireland, a First Aid Responder (FAR) certificate is valid for 2 years from the date of completion. After this period, the certificate expires and the holder must complete a refresher course to maintain their qualified status.
This renewal requirement is set out under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007, which require employers to ensure that an adequate number of competent persons trained in first aid are available in the workplace at all times.
Why Does First Aid Certification Expire?
First aid guidelines and techniques are updated regularly as medical research advances. CPR techniques, for example, have evolved significantly over the years. Regular renewal ensures that first aiders are up to date with current best practice — and that their practical skills remain sharp.
Skills can also deteriorate without regular practice. The refresher course helps first aiders consolidate their knowledge and regain confidence in procedures they may not have had to use since their initial training.
What Is the Difference Between a First Aid Responder and an Occupational First Aider?
In Ireland, there are two main levels of workplace first aid qualification:
- Occupational First Aid (OFA): The standard workplace qualification, required under health and safety legislation for most workplaces. Valid for 2 years.
- First Aid Responder (FAR): A more advanced qualification for those in higher-risk environments or who want a more comprehensive skill set. Also valid for 2 years.
Both qualifications require a full renewal course if the certificate has already lapsed beyond the 2-year period.
How Many First Aiders Does My Business Need?
The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) recommends the following as a general guide:
- Low-risk workplaces (e.g. offices): at least one first aider per 50 employees
- Medium to high-risk workplaces (e.g. construction, manufacturing): at least one first aider per 10–15 employees
The key principle is that a trained first aider must be reasonably available during all working hours, including shift work and remote work sites.
What Happens If My First Aid Certificate Lapses?
If your certificate expires, you are no longer considered a qualified first aider under Irish health and safety law. You will need to complete the full course again rather than a shortened refresher. Employers who fail to maintain adequate first aid coverage may be found in breach of their legal duties if a workplace incident occurs.
