What You Will Learn

On completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the legal framework governing work at height in Ireland
  • Identify the hierarchy of control measures — elimination, collective protection, personal protection
  • Conduct a pre-use inspection of ladders, stepladders, and portable access equipment
  • Recognise the risks associated with fragile surfaces, unprotected edges, and adverse weather
  • Select appropriate fall protection equipment including harnesses, lanyards, and anchor points
  • Apply safe systems of work including permit-to-work procedures
  • Respond correctly in the event of a suspension trauma or fall incident

  • Irish legislation: Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007
  • Risk assessment for work at height activities
  • Hierarchy of control — avoid, prevent, arrest falls
  • Types of access equipment: ladders, scaffolding, mobile elevated work platforms (MEWPs), podium steps
  • Inspection and pre-use checks
  • Personal fall protection equipment (PFPE) — selection, fitting, and inspection
  • Emergency procedures and rescue planning
  • Practical exercises and assessment

Course Duration and Certification

The Working at Heights course runs for one day (approximately 6 hours) and includes both theory and practical components. On successful completion, participants receive a GR Training certificate of completion that is recognised by employers across Ireland. Refresher training is recommended every 3 years, or sooner if working practices change.
